5 Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Kitchen (And It’s Time to Do Something About It)

Outgrowing your kitchen isn’t something that happens overnight, much like when it comes to outgrowing your home. It’s often a gradual realisation that your daily routine has become frustrated, and your use of the space has become cluttered and stress-inducing due to the lack of storage or space to cook in general.

If you’re struggling with the space, then you don’t need to go to the extreme of moving house just yet. However, spotting the signs can be a helpful indication that it’s time for change, whether that’s a renovation or a ‘for sale’ sign.

    1. You’re Constantly Running Out of Storage Space

There are often some clear signs that you’ve outgrown your kitchen, and the main one is that you’re constantly running out of storage space.

If your cabinets are in a state of permanent overflowing and you’re storing your cookware in the oven, then chances are you’ve outgrown your storage capacity.

A fix to this is to renovate and to have cabinet makers create cabinets that maximise the space available, providing you with ample storage for your needs. Custom pantry solutions like pull-out shelves are incredibly helpful to have.

      2. The Layout of Your Current Design is Impractical

When your kitchen feels cramped or awkward to use, then this might be a sign that the layout of your current design has become impractical. This is particularly the case when multiple people are trying to cook or socialise at once.

It’s therefore helpful to rethink your current layout to include an open-plan design or a kitchen island that helps to create more room for preparation and social interaction.

If your kitchen feels cramped or awkward to use, it is a sign that your layout no longer fits your lifestyle, particularly if multiple people are trying to cook or socialise at once.

        3. The Cabinets or Appliances are Constantly Breaking

If your cabinets or appliances are constantly breaking and require hinge repairs or replacements in general, then it’s better to upgrade rather than spending your money on repairs.

Cabinet doors that are sagging or appliances that are outdated are a clear sign that upgrades are required. Replace anything worn or outdated and invest in modern, energy-efficient appliances instead.

          4. Your Countertops Have Disappeared

When counter surfaces are completely covered with small appliances, mail and other items, this leads to a lack of usable prep space or designated storage.

Installing more counter space or a kitchen island is your best approach to help free up more space. You could also hide smaller appliances like coffee makers and blenders in any available cabinets to make more room.

            5. Your Needs Have Changed

The kitchen that’s worked for you for many years may no longer be catering to your current needs. Whether your family has grown or you’re hosting more people now, your space needs to adapt to your life, rather than it being vice versa.

Remodel your current kitchen to cater to your current kitchen habits, like converting a small breakfast nook into a larger pantry, for example.

There are plenty of ways to update your kitchen space to make it more functional for you and to ensure it provides plenty of comfort for years to come.
