As the kitchen is considered the heart of the home, how its designed really does have an impact on us, because we spend so much time in that space no matter if we’re cooking, eating, or just hanging around with family. A basic functional kitchen gets the job done but there’s a world of difference between that and a kitchen that feels deeply special and makes you happy every time you walk into it. The question is what separates a decent kitchen from one that really stands out and feels like it was worth the investment you put into it.

This is the question that, frustratingly, doesn’t have a perfect answer in all instances for every person. You have to be quite focused in what you want and look to keep the approach cost effective. Perhaps you’re tired of taking advice from design rooms though, and feel like taking something else in mind. Consider the following:

    Widening Natural Light

Natural light is a lovely feature to have in a kitchen, and it can be quite poetic, as you notice it most during quiet moments where you’re just moving around the room and letting the space wake up with you. When thinking about improving upon its design, it helps to think about how the sun comes in and how you can maximize its presence in there.

For example, you might pull back heavy curtains, choose paler cabinet colours, clear a few crowded shelves, or place a mirror where it catches the daytime glow and bounces it deeper into the room. All of these can be great, but in some cases you may go even further and install newer, wider windows to really maximize your coverage.

    Cohesive Design Units

You start to notice how the room is designed much more intuitively once the shapes, colours, and textures are put together with a sense of visual match, so it helps to sit with a few samples or ideas and picture how they blend. You might not follow that in every room but here, when you have appliances and many varied ingredients to manage, you can see how uniformity helps.

As such, you might look at your cabinets, counters, and handles as a single family of pieces that share a tone, because once they line up with good design or matching trimmings you’ll feel like it’s easier to cook and spend time in.

    One Feature Piece

A great kitchen is more than the sum of its parts, but a final part can absolutely be a beautiful central unit. Working with designers like J.S. Geddes Kitchens can help you choose that one piece carefully so it sits well with the rest of the room – perhaps a central island or a tile backsplash or the trimmings all count.

If you get it right, you’ll have had the confidence for picking something you’re happy to use, but that also speaks to the character of your kitchen and the family that uses it.

With this advice, you’ll be certain to take your kitchen design up a notch.
