Owning a home is great. You pay less on your mortgage than you would when renting, and you get to do what you want with your property, including making major changes. Even better, at the end of the day, you have a physical asset to pass on to your children or to support yourself.
One big downside, however, is that it’s up to you to repair and maintain your home. Sometimes you might be able to put off repairs for a bit, but here are some repairs you should do right away, whether it’s to keep your home secure or prevent further damage and expenses.

Broken Windows
Modern windows are, thankfully, much harder to break than they used to be. Single-pane glass windows could be smashed due to an errant baseball, but double or triple-pane windows are far more robust. But this doesn’t mean windows are unbreakable.
If your window does get broken, it’s important to fix it as soon as possible. You can temporarily patch it with other materials, but this always looks unsightly. Even worse, a broken window is a security risk as people could more easily break in, and it can let a draft into your home.
Look into window repair to get the pane or the whole window replaced if necessary. If this is a common problem, you may need to get stronger windows.
Leaking Pipes
Leaking or cracked pipes are a problem you need to fix immediately. Water can damage your belongings and even the structure of your home, and leaks don’t just go away on their own. This is even worse when you have a leaking waste pipe. They need to be repaired.
If it’s a small leak, you can use a bucket or another container to catch the excess water. But either way, call a plumber quickly. With an uncontrolled or major leak, you can get an emergency callout, so they should arrive as quickly as possible.
Electrical Issues
While there are some things you can repair at home yourself, electrical issues are not one of them. If you have electrical problems, you may also have a massive fire or electrocution risk at home.
If your power keeps shorting or you notice a burning smell from a switch or an outlet, call an electrician and try to avoid using the electrical systems in your home until the problem is fixed.
Missing Roof Tiles
After a storm, you should always check your roof to make sure it’s still in good condition. Even minor issues like missing roof tiles shouldn’t be left alone, as this can cause drafts and leaks into your home. Get a roofer to repair the damage as soon as possible.
Gutter Cleaning
Gutter cleaning is one of those chores that nobody likes to do, but neglecting it can cause much more severe issues. You can clean your gutters yourself to save money. It’s best to do this regularly, not just when they’re blocked up. Or you can hire someone to clean them more quickly and efficiently.
