Maintaining a clean and hygienic bathroom is a nice experience. You want to be able to go in there and feel like you can relax.
But, of course, that’s not what usually happens. Often, you’re fighting a losing battle against bad smells, mould, and other issues.
If that sounds like you, then this post is here to help. We look at how to get rid of nasty hygiene issues in the bathroom so you can really enjoy the space and use it to unwind.
Deal With Mould
Top of your list of priorities should be to deal with mould. Unfortunately, unless you stay on top of dehumidifying the space, you’ll soon see black stains turning up everywhere.
Fortunately, you can deal with these by adding an extractor fan or, better yet, getting your air conditioning to dry out the air. You can also open a window and air the bathroom regularly, as long as there is space for air to flow.
You should also consider tile and grout cleaning if it has attracted mould. Cleaning it will reduce the number of spores in the atmosphere.
Eliminate Toilet Bowl Stains
Another thing you might want to focus on is toilet bowl stains. These have a habit of showing up when you least want them to, like when guests arrive at your home.
These stains aren’t just hard water marks. They’re actually a combination of minerals in water and bacteria, which makes them extra gross.
Fortunately, you can get rid of them by using an acid, like vinegar. Vinegar really gets into the substrate and penetrates it, dissolving it and making your toilet bowl white and sparkling again.
Remove Soap Scum

Soap scum is slightly less revolting, but still a potential hygiene issue, especially if you have a less-than-perfect immune system. It can form in the shower or on tiles, and be challenging to remove.
If you want to get rid of it, combine vinegar with dish soap. This combination usually helps the soap scum come off the walls and shower unit, but be prepared to do some scrubbing.
Eliminate Clogged Drains
At the same time, you want to do everything you can to eliminate clogged drains. Nothing is worse than when a toilet backs up.
If you have a clogging issue, you can try pouring hot water down the toilet to see if it eliminates the issue. You can also try mixing baking soda with vinegar to see if that dislodges the blockages.
If that doesn’t work, then a coat hanger unfurled can be an option. You can sometimes push the obstruction down the toilet so it flushes normally.
Prevent Bacteria On Towels
Finally, you can make your bathroom more hygienic by preventing bacteria on towels. The best way to do this is to get a towel drying rack or radiator and ensure that towels can quickly dry after you use them. If you let them stay wet, then they will start to smell and it will be harder to wash them in the future.
